Presented by Azaadi, Grassroots is an evening of spoken word, discussion and art exploring the past, present and future of Sikh activism. Join us for a powerful dialogue led by Sikh activists and artists from Toronto, California and BC.  Speakers and Performers Noyz @noyzhiphop Noyz (Amrit Tung) is an MC, producer, spoken word artist and community organizer from Brampton. He has performed at some of the largest music festivals in North America including SXSW, Canadian Music Week, Manifesto, and DesiFest, and has had his music featured on notable platforms such as The Huffington Post, Complex, Noisey, Team Backpack, and Toronto Life. Noyz plays an active role in the arts community in the GTA by engaging with youth through creative writing workshops, visual arts showcases, and open mics. Damneet Kaur @_dkaur Damneet Kaur is a writer and poet based in San Francisco, CA. Moving to the United States from Punjab, India at a young age and growing up in the community of Barrio Logan in San Diego, CA, Damneet connects her childhood experiences to her writing. She values and dedicates her time to the community that has raised her. As a first generation, low-income woman of color, Kaur finds it important to nurture the growth of our youth. For her, poetry is one of the truest and most ancient forms in which people are able to tell their stories, validate their experiences and find solidarity amongst each other. Intersecting her Punjabi culture into the Latin@ community she was raised in, she hopes to create bridges that will empower women of color, while eliminating the illusion of borders. Jasmin Kaur @jusmun Born on unceded Sto:lo First Nations territory Jasmin Kaur is a writer, graphic designer and spoken word artist. Her writing, which explores otherness, decolonization and the beauty of resistance, acts as a means of healing and reclaiming identity. As a youth facilitator, Jasmin has been leading writing and personal development workshops for young people since 2013. Aside from community organizing, Jasmin is working towards becoming a middle school teacher. Fateh Singh @crownandmane Founder of Crown&Mane, Fateh Singh was raised in the UK and currently resides in British Columbia. Fateh Singh created Crown&Mane as a socially conscious multi disciplined creative movement representing 'The Sovereign State of Mind', a mindset free from social conditioning, committed to the pursuit of connecting to the authentic self. Inspired by the warrior traditions of the ancient Sikh warrior, Fateh Singh also founded Shastardhari, an online platform dedicated to the culturally rich subject of antique Indian arms and armour. Moninder Singh  Moninder Singh is a Sikh political thinker and the Director of Health, Safety & Wellness at the University of the Fraser Valley. Through his activist work, Moninder Singh has travelled across North America, Europe and Australia presenting on the concept of Punjab’s sovereignty. His conceptualization of Khalistan and Sikh revolution is built on the foundations of gurbani and gurmat. He is currently completing a Master of Arts in Leadership Studies.    FAQs  Do I need a ticket for this event? Yes, seating is limited. Please be sure to get your tickets well in advance.
