Following a hugely popular season last summer, QV Melbourne’s Outdoor Cinema returns on 30 November with another program full of Melbourne’s favourite things: live entertainment, free cocktails, special food, red carpets, instafamous dogs, charity screenings, a film festival and more.
Melbourne’s only silent cinema is located on the open air Astroturf square in the heart of the precinct. One of the city’s most affordable outdoor cinemas, QV Outdoor Cinema’s $12 ticket includes deckchair seating and high quality headphones for every audience member.
Sessions begin at 8:30pm Thursday to Sunday nights from 30 November until 26 February. Tickets are on sale today via qvcinema.com.au.
Melbourne filmmaker and film programmer, Gus Berger, curates the 2016-2017 season, with themes ranging from music to sport, lovable dog films and family movies.
“QV Cinema was such a hit last year and this summer’s season will have even more themed weeks and events. The sport movie week from 12-15 January will feature pre film games and prizes, while the music week from 19-22 January will include live music performances, and we have a pre-film performance from the Melbourne Musical Theatre Festival on 8 January. The wildly popular bring-your-dog screenings have also been upsized, with all proceeds from ticket sales going to Lort Smith,” says Gus.
The season opening on Wednesday 30 November coincides with the launch of Shop the City. After spending up big in Albert Coates Lane, Melbournians are invited to a FREE screening of Sex and the City: The Movie. QV Melbourne will feel like Manhattan with the red carpet rolled out for the Shop + Sex & the City season launch featuring a live soundtrack of funky beats, customised cocktails from Father’s Office and artisan soft serve courtesy of Aqua S. Bookings are required.
This summer sees QV Outdoor Cinema host an official film festival event with the premiere of the Indigenous film Half for the Made in Melbourne Film Festival on 9 December, produced via the Festival’s First Nations Script to Screen initiative. The event will include traditional Indigenous dance, several other short film screenings, and a Q&A with filmmakers.
This year, the special event for dog-lovers on 10 December has been taken to a new level. Screening Disney’s classic Lady and the Tramp, the event will see ‘Instafamous’ and adoption dogs alike walk the red carpet, all dressed in their festive best for the Doggie + Deckchair premiere. All proceeds from ticket sales will go to the Doggie + Deckchair charity, Lort Smith. Lort Smith is Australia’s largest not-for-profit animal hospital, runs an adoption centre and community outreach programs including pet therapy. Two other Doggie + Deckchair screenings are scheduled in January and February.
An entire week is dedicated to Ryan Gosling right before Valentine’s Day on 9-12 February. Teeling Whiskey will recreate Gosling’s concoctions from Crazy, Stupid, Love on Friday 10 February, with free cocktails for all cinema goers.
Pre film dining is easy at QV, whether it’s a wrap from Schnitz, a Movenpick ice cream, a dark hot chocolate from Max Brenner, or a modern Asian dinner at Red Spice QV, audiences will be spoilt for choice before settling into the intimate 80-seat deckchair and beanbag cinema.
Worlds apart from other retail precincts in Melbourne, QV represents the quintessential Melbourne lifestyle. Intimate laneways in the urban precinct give visitors the freedom to wander and discover the eclectic mix of shops, cafes and restaurants at their own pace. Located on the corner of Lonsdale and Swanston Streets, QV has something for everyone with boutiques, enlightening entertainment and cosmopolitan bars and restaurants.
Lort Smith runs an adoption centre and community outreach programs including pet therapy, and is Australia’s largest not-for-profit animal hospital.
