Introduction to Programming with Scratch Get started learning computer science with the fun and easy Scratch drag-and-drop blocks. Make It Fly Animate the Scratch Cat, The Powerpuff Girls, or even a taco. Choose a character and make it fly! This instructor-led tutorial steps you through the basics of using the Scratch environment and building your first project. Plan on arriving early at 1:30 pm to enjoy some pizza provided by Kids Tech University -  a semester-long event which features the Virginia Tech professors, students, clubs, and community. Kids can take part in the virtual labs and forum after the all-day event to continue to cultivate their interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. This is one of four regional "Hour of Code" workshops that is being done in Roanoke and Blacksburg as a part of the "Computer Science Education Week" initiative (Dec 5th - 11th). In conjunction with local STEM leaders and code.org, we have worked with regional businesses, organizations and STEM leaders to offer these coding workshops for kids, parents and STEM educators. Here are the activities and workshops we have planned in the Roanoke/Blacksburg area during this week in December: HoC 1 of 4 - Educators and Parents: Introduction to the Raspberry Pi and ProgrammingWed Dec 7th, in Roanoke @ CoLab, 7-9pm (Link) HoC 2 of 4 - Kids/Adults: Python Programming RaspberryPi Sensors, Displays and Internet IntegrationThur Dec 8th, in Blacksburg @ Rackspace, 5:30-8:30pm (Link) HoC 3 of 4 - Kids: Programming Programming a Virtual RobotSat Dec 10th, in Roanoke @ Science Museum of Western Virginia, 10:15-11:30am (Link) HoC 4 of 4 - Kids: Introduction to Programming with ScratchSat Dec 10th, in Roanoke @ CoLab, 2-3pm (this event) FAQs What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?There is limited parking in front of the CoLab on Grandin Avenue. There is additional parking behind the building. What can I bring into the event?You may bring your own laptop, if you want research some topics during the workshop. Free WiFi is available inside the CoLab. How can I contact the organizer with any questions?Email: darrell@roalug.net Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?No, attendance will be taken before the workshop begins. Is it ok if the name on my ticket or registration doesn't match the person who attends?Yes. Since there is limited space in the CoLab conference room, seating preference will be given to those that have pre-registered.
