It uses two trainers and a limited number of participants to create an intensive learning experience. About IPT Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) is an evidence-based intervention developed in the mid-1980s for the management of depression. IPT was adapted for adolescents with depression in 1993 and revised in 2004. More than 250 empirical studies support the efficacy and effectiveness of IPT (individual and group), for a variety of affective disorders, anxiety disorders, and eating disorders and for a wide range of patients from children to the elderly. IPT is recognized as evidence-based by many professional bodies including the American Psychiatric Association, the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence in the UK, the International Cochrane Collaboration and Australia’s Medicare Better Access initiative. Workshop prerequisites The two prerequisites for attending this advanced level training are: completion of a two-day introductory workshop in IPT or equivalent having provided an IPT intervention for at least one, and preferably two, cases. Aims of the workshop The workshop aims to: provide you with an opportunity to consolidate and build your knowledge and skills in IPT familiarise you with some intermediate and advanced level concepts in IPT. Learning objectives At the conclusion of the workshops, you should be able to: demonstrate confidence and skills in conducting an Interpersonal Inventory provide a collaborative holistic Interpersonal Formulation that is meaningful for your client demonstrate a variety of techniques for working on the Major Problem Areas integrate Iatrogenic Role Transition into clinical practice for the treatment of Persistent Depressive Disorder (Dysthymia) address the aims of the Conclusion of Acute Treatment evaluate the need for and then implement Continuation and Maintenance treatment for both Depressive and Bipolar disorders understand the role of Interpersonal and Social Rhythm Therapy (ISIPT) for Bipolar Disorder describe the four Phases of ISIPT critically appraise your competencies in IPT and identify areas for further professional development in IPT. Content and learning methods of the workshop This advanced level workshop uses a range of learning methods, including skill rehearsal, live demonstrations, video vignettes, case discussion, didactic presentation and small group activities. The structure and process of the two days will parallel the structure and process of an IPT intervention. The workshop provides opportunities for you to: present and reflect on aspects of one of your IPT cases practice skills in relation to relevant learning objectives described above clarify your questions regarding the application of IPT familiarise yourself with some intermediate and advanced level concepts and techniques in IPT. Target audience This workshop is intended for mental health clinicians, including psychologists, clinical psychologists, social workers, psychiatrists, nurses, occupational therapists, psychotherapists, general practitioners. The Presenters Rob McAlpine and Anthony Hillin are certified IPT Trainers with the Interpersonal Psychotherapy Institute. Rob and Anth have provided introductory IPT training to over 3000 clinicians and also clinical supervision for therapists using IPT in Australia and the USA. This work has included co-facilitating training programs with Prof Scott Stuart, former President, International Society of Interpersonal Psychotherapy, in Australia and the USA. They also provide advanced level training in IPT. Rob McAlpine is a clinical psychologist and has extensive experience working with adults and adolescents. Rob has over 17 yrs experience with IPT and IPT-A. Rob also provides training and supervision in managing trauma using imagery reprocessing. Anthony Hillin has over 25 yrs experience working on adolescent and adult issues, as a clinician, trainer and manager of an adolescent mental health service. His training and consulting has been commissioned by over 100 agencies in the UK, USA, India and Australia. Anthony’s work spans a range of issues including grief and loss, mindfulness, experiential learning design and team building. Anthony co-developed and delivered the NSW Aboriginal Grief and Loss Training Program. While based at the NSW Institute of Psychiatry for 12 years, Rob and Anth developed Australia’s most comprehensive interagency training program in adolescent mental health for the NSW School-Link and Queensland Ed-LinQ initiatives. Anth and Rob continue to deliver a suite of courses in depression, anxiety and related disorders to mental health clinicians, school and TAFE psychologists, social workers and related staff.
