Originally a solo project, Car Seat Headrest is the product of brainchild Will Toledo. Toldeo (real name Will Barnes) started Car Seat Headrest as a lo-fi, DIY project that took its name from Toledo's preference of recording vocals in his car. He self-released his first four albums, given numerical names one through four based on their release, in the Spring and Summer of 2010. His fan base grew tremendously after the self-release of Twin Fantasy in 2011. Toledo signed with Matador Records in 2015, and that same year released a compilation of his self-released material, titled Teens of Style. His first major studio album of original material came in 2016, titled Teens of Denial. That same year, he began a promotional tour which saw Car Seat Headrest utilize a full band.
