Jill Scott broke into the R&B world in 2000 combining sass and soul to become one of Neo-Soul's hottest performers. The Phillie native started out originally as a spoken word artist before being discovered by ?uestlove of The Roots who recruited her to work with them in the studio. In 2000, she co-wrote and performed back-up vocals on the Grammy-Award winning track, "You Got Me", and then toured Canada during a stint on the Broadway musical Rent. Following the success of both achievements, Scott was picked up by Hidden Beach Recordings who released her debut album, Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1. The single, "Gettin' In The Way", was a bold soul anthem and garnered her rotation in the video music world. However, it was with the single, "A Long Walk", for which she was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2003. To promote her debut, she embarked on the Words and Sounds Tour, which toured North America throughout 2001. After releasing a live album of her tour, Experience: Jill Scott 826+ in 2001, Scott returned to the studio to record material for her sophomore effort. Three long years later and she released her second LP, Beautifully Human: Words and Sounds Vol. 2, in 2004. In support of the effort, Scott embarked on the Buzz Tour, in 2004 which kept her on the road throughout the summer. Due to fan demand, Scott embarked on the Big Beautiful Tour in 2005. The nationwide tour featured Common and Raphael Saadiq as the opening acts and solidified Scott as a top live performer. Scott took a few years off before returning in 2007 with several critically acclaimed projects. She earned a Grammy Award in 2007 for her collaboration with George Benson & Al Jarreau for the track "Bless This Child". She appeared in Tyler Perry's hit film, Why Did I Get Married? and she released her third album The Real Thing: Words and Sounds Vol. 3, which fulfilled her contract with Hidden Beach. In 2008, Scott embarked on the year long The Real Thing Tour: An Evening with Jill Scott, which featured Neo-soul starlet, Bilal. Scott then turned her efforts to the small screen and her starring role on the critically acclaimed HBO series The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency. After a few years off from recording and touring, Scott emerged in 2010 with a co-headlining tour with Maxwell and she penned material for her fourth album. The effort, The Light of the Sun, was released in June, 2011 and marks the Neo-Soul superstar's latest hit album.
