Etheridge's talents were apparent at an early age; She learned to play the guitar at eight-years-old and was invited to perform with several groups as a teenager before attending the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. After lasting a few semesters, she decided she had the chops to pursue a music career and moved to Los Angeles. She was discovered and signed by Island Records who released her self-titled debut in 1988. The album was an underground hit that eventually became certified double-Platinum and earned her a Grammy nomination. She released her sophomore set, Brave and Crazy, in 1989 and toured extensively to develop a large and loyal fan-base. She earned her first Grammy for the effort and continued to tour extensively. Etheridge returned in 1993 and recorded her massively successful Yes I Am album which addressed her sexuality and became the biggest record of her career.
