The group formed in San Francisco in 1982 and were an immediate hit on the local club scene. Known for their rowdy live performances, the band had opened for ZZ Top and Ozzy Osbourne before releasing their debut album, Dawn Patrol, in 1982. The album was a Platinum success and the band found their videos in heavy rotation on MTV. In 1984, they released their breakthrough album, Midnight Madness, which featured the #5 power ballad, "Sister Christian". In 1985, Night Ranger released their biggest selling album to-date, Seven Wishes, which became their first album to chart in the top ten on the Billboard 200 en route to three million copies sold. Jack Blades left the group to form Damn Yankees and the other members focused on solo projects. However, by 1995 the band reunited to record a new album and embark on a Night Ranger worldwide tour.
