The Birmingham town hall opened its doors to the public in 1834, and is a perfect example of Roman Revival civic architecture. During its earliest days, the Birmingham Town Hall served citizens as a place in which they could stage political debates, as well providing local government members with a place to meet until the construction and opening of the Council House, which came about in the 1870s. The venue maintained its reputation as a premier destination for key note speakers from the political world throughout the remainder of the 19th and 20th centuries; David Lloyd George, Neville Chamberlain, Neil Kinnock and Margaret Thatcher are just a few of those who have delivered addresses at the Birmingham Town Hall in the past. When it first opened, Birmingham Town Hall was hailed as one of, if not the finest music halls in Britain, playing host to many major acts including The Beatles, Buddy Holly, Bob Dylan and The Rolling Stones. Unfortunately, due to health and safety concerns, the venue was forced to close in 1996. However, after a massive, 35 million renovation project, the Birmingham Town Hall reopened in 2007, its refurbishment carried out with a concert hall function specifically in mind. It wasn’t long before the venue reclaimed its place amongst the British music venue elite. Nowadays, the Birmingham Town Hall events programme is a diverse one, featuring everything from rock, pop and classical music concerts, to graduation ceremonies, plays, kids events and more.
