The Freeman Branch Library first opened on November 1, 1964 and moved to the Harris County multipurpose annex in Clear Lake on July 13, 1976. A new 42,000 square foot joint facility between Harris County and the City of Houston opened on June 8, 2004 and was renamed the Clear Lake City-County Freeman Branch Library. The Freeman Library has been serving the Clear Lake area for over 50 years. The Freeman Branch was named in honor of Captain Theodore C. Freeman, the first astronaut to lose his life in the U. S. space program.
With strong support from area families and the business community, the Friends of the Freeman Library raise over $80,000 each year to purchase books, fund special children's programs, and upgrade library equipment and furnishings. Fundraising efforts, which include a bookstore in the library open most hours the library is open, an annual membership drive, and the "Books Alive Week," have financed many "extras" that enrich the quality of library service at the Freeman Library.
