When Massey Hall was originally built in the early 1890s, founder and financer Hart Massey had initially intended it to be a memorial to his son that would focus on aiding the development of the arts. Today, Massey Hall has come a long way from its original concept and has now become an internationally recognized venue.
Massey Hall is located in the Garden District of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. When it opened in 1894, Massey Hall Toronto was equipped to hold 3,500 patrons. When the venue underwent several renovations in the 1930s and 40s, seating capacity decreased to 2,765 and Toronto’s Massey Hall was given an almost completely different look. Regardless of the changes made to its appearance, the historical and cultural value of Massey Hall remains to be undeniable. In the 1970s, Massey Hall even became one of Toronto’s first “heritage” landmarks.
The Massey Hall schedule of events has expanded its repertoire to include a variety of events. Boxing matches, chess tournaments, movies, beauty pageants, weddings and rallies are just some of the events that have been featured on the Massey Hall schedule. Toronto’s Massey Hall has also had many distinguished guests and legendary performers grace its stage. Amongst some of these famous figures are Queen Mary, Bob Dylan, the Dalai Lama, Neil Young, Winston Churchill and U2.
